Memos From the Edge

Welcome

Episode 1 About Memos From the Edge

This short Introduction tells you what to expect from ‘Memos From the Edge’.

If this is the first time you’ve visited ‘Memos’ it’s worth listening to this before you dive in to the others.

Episode 1 About Memos From the Edge

The Memos aren’t arranged in any particular order. Just take them as you find them. In most cases you’ll get a good idea what the Memo is about from the title.

It’s a pleasure that you want to listen to these personal views of life from the edge of this life. I hope that they don’t cause any offence and that you can engage with the ideas and observations.

Age 60, I find myself on a huge learning curve, along with my family. That’s no bad place to be, though it’s far from comfortable. Like me, the Memos are a work in progress, and like anyone, they develop as a communal effort. So I’d love to hear your response.

Since the Summer of 2018 My wife, Marjorie, has been writing a proper blog about the journey we’ve been on. Many people all over the world find it helpful in all sorts of ways. You can find it at

… and I strongly recommend it.

Episode 2 All-Round Realism

One way that we’ve been helped to live with cancer has been by keeping realistic about how good the good gifts are as well as how horrible the cancer is: all-round realism.

Episode 3 When I’m Weak I’m Strong

Episode 3 When I’m Weak I’m Strong

It’s not how we usually think, and not the way we often want our lives and, if we’re part of one, our church to be. But seeing how true it is has helped us.

Episode 4 The Daily Life

Living one day at a time: different, better, inevitable

The dominant frame in which we see ourselves with other people

Episode 6 What’s Kept You Going?

This might sound like ‘The last Memo’, but it’s not intended a that; I just didn’t want to get caught out!

  1. Refreshingly realistic, but comes with conviction of faith in God’s purpose and the note of hope. Press onward and upward !

  2. Thank you for this Dominic! I have just learnt there is a twitter email system! These memos are very deeply touching and ring very true for us all. Thank you for twitter emailing me, you didn’t have to.

In the ‘weak are strong’ I would love to add further encouragement that God did his greatest work when things were being done to him, not him doing things. He was a passive force in many regards through the passion. In the same way when we are having medical things done to us, or when we are not doing the caring, but being cared for, or when we are so tired and fatigued, that can be just as valuable an actively as doing something. There is a strange opposite in most of the bible, and true of most patients I have found there is a beautiful courage in being ‘done to’, rather than ‘doing’. And the living day to day, is more relevant than ever at the moment!
    with many many kind regards,
    yours,

  3. All round realism – I appreciate your comment that the good things are just as good and the beautiful things are just as beautiful as ever. It’s easy to be drawn into a lop-sided realism.

  4. I just love your thoughts in Episode 5, Shared Humanity. God is so much bigger than our limited view. God loves and blesses not only the ‘saved’. So many of our hymns are about ‘us’ and how God is good to ‘us’. It might only be in my mind, but I fear not, that when we sing such words we think of God being good to me and other saved people. And of course he is and of course those of us who commit ourselves to His love, understand and experience His love and blessing, as others do not. But as you say, God made and loves and blesses each person – not to say that he doesn’t also judge each person, including the saved – I’m not so keen on standing at the judgement seat of Christ, whatever that will mean, but I am thankful that trusting in His saving work, that judgement will be part of my everlasting life. 6. What refreshing words… it is with great delight I heard you Dominic.
My experiences of delving deeper with others has generally been with people who on the surface don’t appear to know their Saviour and Lord… however his love flows from us and therefor touches each soul we connect with. For long enough I was one of those folk so my hope is that people hear your reflection and ponder their next encounter with the me of time gone by….it’s often easier to connect with like minded folk but how much more exciting and interesting to see less like minded folk encounter Jesus through his love 😊
